At present, employers aren’t legally required to give their employees time off for medical or dental appointments. This usually depends on the employment contract. However, there are some key legal exceptions in which employers must allow time off. Firstly, there’s an antenatal care. Pregnant employees have a legal right to paid time off to attend antenatal appointments. Also, unpaid time off for up to two days is given to partners of pregnant individuals. Another is concerning disability rights. If a condition is deemed a disability under the Equality Act 2010, employers must make “reasonable adjustments”, this includes allowing for medical visits. Unforeseen medical emergencies may be treated as a sickness absence. Employees with dependents have a right to unpaid leave when there’s an emergency concerning a dependant. As of April 2026, the Employment Rights Act 2025 will make Statutory Sick Pay a day-one right.
