When an employer needs to reduce their workforce, they may rely on redundancy, which is a specific type of dismissal from employment. It’s distinguished from other forms of dismissal because it’s used to support business needs, rather than resulting from an individual’s performance or conduct. Redundancy generally occurs due to the following reasons. Firstly, if the business closes; this could happen if an employer stop or intends to stop operating the business where an employee works. It may arise from a workplace closure, when a business closes a particular location, or it’s moved to a new area. And lending from the need to decrease costs, restructuring, or the implantation of new technology, there may a need for less staff. The redundancy process usually entails preparation, a selection pool, selection criteria, consultation (could be individual or collective), and termination and appeals.
