Employers’ National Insurance (NI) is a tax paid by employers based on their employees’ earning above a certain threshold. It doesn’t affect the amount that the employee takes home, the purpose is to fund public services like the NHS and state pensions. It’s a separate cost from an employee’s income tax and their own contributions to NI, and it’s collected through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system. There are different types of employers’ National Insurance contributions (NICs), such as Class 1 Secondary NICs, which is the main contribution, Class 1A NICs, these are paid on certain employee benefits and expenses, and Class 1B NICs, these are expenses covered by a PAYE Settlement Agreement.
