As per UK law, Working Time Regulations 1999, the maximum is typically 48 hours per week on average, usually over a period of 17 weeks. However, employees can opt out in writing to work more. There are different rules depending on the position, for example, offshore roles and jobs with young workers. The 40-hour week, five days, eight hours, is common practice; a legal limit is in place to mitigate stress and burnout. Key aspects of maximum working weekly hours are that legally; to protect individuals’ Health & Safety, people should not exceed an average of 48 hours a week. Staff can opt out and volunteer to work over 48 hours, but this must be agreed with their employer, there mustn’t be penalties for refusal. Different rules apply to night workers and those travelling for work. Strict limits are implemented to young people (under 18), with lower caps and fewer restrictions during school holidays.
