Self-certification is when an individual or entity makes a formal declaration that a statement or condition doesn’t require third-party verification because it’s true and correct. This process is applicable in various contexts, but it’s most commonly used for sickness-related absences in the United Kingdom, as well as other sectors such as product compliance and professional certifications. Self-certification is mostly relied upon for short-term sickness leave. Employees can self-certify their sickness for a maximum of up to seven consecutive calendar days—this includes non-workdays like weekends and bank holidays. Medical evidence, such as a doctor’s note (fit note), isn’t required for self-certified absences. Though if the illness goes beyond the seven days, a fit note will have to be provided by a healthcare professional. This system streamlines the process for short illnesses and reduces the workload for healthcare services.
