(Last updated )

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is a minimum payment that employers must pay to eligible employees who are absent through sickness. At present, SSP is set at £118.75 for up to 28 weeks. To be eligible, employees must earn an average or at least the Lower Earnings Limit (£125 per week). Your staff will not receive payment during the three “qualifying” working days of an illness. Payments commence on the fourth day and is paid in the same way as ordinary wage, with reductions from tax and National Insurance. Employees may qualify for SSP from multiple jobs if they satisfy the relevant criteria for each role, but their earnings cannot be combined across different employers to meet the earnings threshold.
