In a powerful reminder of the life-saving impact of basic first aid skills, a dramatic incident unfolded on 25th February during a routine youth boxing training session at the New Cross Double Jab Boxing Club in southeast London. Veteran actor and boxing mentor Jon McKenna, aged 77, suddenly collapsed from a cardiac arrest while in the ring. His life was saved by the quick and decisive action of Patrick Harris, the club's founder, who immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
This incident underscores the critical importance of having trained individuals who can respond to medical emergencies in any setting—whether it's a sports facility, office, school, or any business environment. When McKenna collapsed, Harris’s swift intervention helped keep him alive long enough for emergency medical personnel to arrive and take him to a medical facility. McKenna later made a full recovery, and his gratitude was clear: “Pat’s a hero to me. Every breath I take now is because of him.”
The moments were captured on the club’s security cameras, showing Harris springing into action when he saw McKenna stumble and fall onto the canvas. In a split second, Harris recognized the gravity of the situation and knew that every second counted. Without hesitation, he began performing CPR. His calmness under pressure ensured McKenna’s heart continued to function until medical professionals arrived.

As Harris reflected on the moment, he emphasized the importance of being prepared to act quickly: “If you’ve got that knowledge, you’ve got a chance of saving someone’s life, and that’s the best prize of all.” His response wasn’t driven by panic but by his extensive training and readiness to step in when needed.
Jon McKenna, whose life was saved by Harris’s actions, couldn’t express enough how thankful he was for the quick thinking and skill of his friend and colleague. “There is no way I can repay him for saving my life. He will always be my friend, and I will always stand up for Pat in any way I can,” McKenna shared.
McKenna’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable, and he intends to return to his coaching role at the boxing club soon.

Lithium batteries are increasingly used across various industries, powering everything from hand tools to electric vehicles and portable devices. While their efficiency and energy density make them a popular choice, there are significant safety concerns that must be addressed to protect workers and workplaces.
World Day for Health & Safety is an annual international campaign organised by the International Labour Organization. It is observed on 28th April each year and the intention is to raise awareness and promote a safe, healthy and sustainable workplace.
Tasks involving manual handling are present across all industries and can affect any person at work to some extent. From pushing trolleys to lifting and moving furniture, manual handling tasks are varied and must be specifically risk assessed to prevent permanent damage. Improper manual handling over time can lead to back injuries, upper limb disorders, and lower limb injuries. Depending on the severity of the harm, damage done by manual handling can lead to permanent, life-changing disabilities.
